Divided we Stand
2010Divided culturally, politically, financially and so on. Still we are part of the same tree. From the roots all the way up to the leaves, we are divided, but we are standing firm. We will not fall down or apart. This is who we are as Curacao, divided, but standing.
Hopper
2010A picture taken from the airplane hopping from one island to the next, inspired this triptych. Warning! If you stand in front of this painting too long, you will get sucked into it.
The Gates
2010You will have to go through a certain amount of gates, before you are able to meet Him in the sky.
Sputnik
2010In paintings like the "Dreamcatcher" I play with holding on to a cloud. To me clouds are like thoughts, dreams and maybe even the spirit. It's almost impossible to hold on to. But you should try. In one of my sketches of "The Dreamcatchers" this composition was so much alike the Sputnik satellite, I just had to give it this title. And this title gave it a whole new meaning.
Little Island in the Sun
2010Like my large painting the "Island in the Sun", this one has the same content. But because it is so much smaller, I had to call it "Little Island in the Sun" And with this title it makes the situation even worse. How can a small Island like Curacao keep on emitting so much toxic smoke.
Forest of Indifference
2010Again a painting inspired by the refinery here on Curacao. Pipes, rising up from the asphalt lake, emitting brown toxic smoke. A forest of indifference, because almost nobody seems to care.
De Kleine Regentijd
2010Translates into "Little rainy season" I haven't seen this phenomenon anywhere else. Here on Curacao it can rain in front of your house, but when you take a look behind your house, It's completely dry.
The Bridge
2010Inspired by the railing of the Juliana bridge on Curacao.
Dreamcatcher
2010Elusive as dreams are, try to hold on to them
Island in the Sun
2009Island in the sun... Yeah right.
The Tower
2008The language isn't the problem anymore, it is what people say, that is.
The Ladder
2008A mix of the Jacob's Ladder and the fairytale Jack and the beanstalk
Rainforest
2008The birth of a cloud
The three philosophers
2008In 2002 I painted this work for the first time. Then I used acrylics. For my 2008 exhibition I painted it again, this time in oil.
Aeolus
2008Aeolus; god of the winds. On Curacao the wind blows always from the east. It is bound onto the land by Aeolus
Quarterback
2008Four clouds painted on jute. Jute looks like the backside of canvas, hence 'Quarterback' A group portrait of four clouds
Momentum
2008A cloud with sufficient momentum can bounce back from the earth
Intermezzo
2008To fool the eye, I painted the frame (stretcher bars) on canvas, like it is hanging on a white wall. I painted the canvas hanging from a wire in front of the frame. The wire is real and the shadow hanging from the bottom of the painting is real (black cardboard)
Dreamcatcher
2007I need stronger ropes, for my dreams elude me
canvas explosion
2008Several canvasses glued and screwed together. On those canvasses I painted an explosion of canvasses. Exploding outward from the center. The center isn't visible.
The 7th Canvas
2006Start counting, see the 7th canvas?
The 7th Canvas (leftside view)
2006The 7th Canvas seen from the left.
The 7th Canvas (rightside view)
2006The 7th Canvas seen from the right.
Cotton candy
2005Inspired by the overwhelming clouds of the rainy season
High Tide
2006A rubbervine seedpod found near the Hato plains, seemed to me like a ship in the desert. Lured to all that water high up in the clouds.
Life after life
2006Life has many fases...
Finally refined (closed)
2006(the triptych is closed) An eerie sight, the sky is lit by the flames of the catcracker.
Finally refined (opened)
2006(the triptych is opened) If we wait long enough nature will take over the refinery.
A hummingbirds fantasy
2006Inspired by the story of Don Quichote, this hummingbird is also a bit paranoia and thinks it is on Viagra.
Ora luna ta bari
2006Ora luna ta bari: when the moon sweeps clean the heavens. An old saying on Curacao, meaning: Don't go outside when you see the light of the moon appearing but not the moon itself. If you do, you will meet monsters and maybe even the devil himself.
Memories of the future II
2006All sorts of driftwood make the outline of the brain. The cloud represents the spirit that remembers things to come; the bent earth and the driftwood are one.
Twister
2006A spiraling cloud above the Hato plains. Two stylized Dividivi trees squeeze the cloud to drink from her moisture.
Attached
2004Me and my wife and the love that grows between us.
Self fulfilling prophecy
2002Three vines holding on to three circular clouds. Like the ropes on a sailing ship that hold on to the sails to catch the wind. Here the clouds represent the wind in the sails.
Artificial Reef
2004Inspired by the artificial reef of Porto Mari on Curacao. This artificial reef brings forth some artificial life forms
Goldfish
2002For my 32nd birthday I got A bowl with two little goldfish in it. After two weeks they were dead. On this painting the fishbowl and alot of dead goldfish. Except for one, wich is just swimming around the corner
Heaven on earth
2003Literally; clouds from heaven touch down on earth for a brief time, only to return to heaven again
The Kiss
2002Body on earth, mind in heaven
911 Terrestrial Time
2001Did it happen after or before
